St Mary’s Historic House Trust was incorporated in 2019 as a ‘Charitable Company Limited by Guarantee’ with the following aims:
- the preservation, for the benefit of the public, of St. Mary’s House and Gardens as a heritage asset,
- the promotion of arts and culture, and
- the advancement of education of the public, in particular in the history and architecture of St Mary’s House and its literary and artistic collections and contents.
Please note: the former St Mary’s Historic House & Gardens Charitable Trust has now been closed, and the funds transferred to the new St Mary’s Historic House Trust; this is to fulfil the requirements of the Charity Commission, enabling the commercial operations of St Mary’s to be brought under the auspices of the Trust.
St. Mary’s is a unique example of our national heritage. It has magnificent panelling and marquetry, the unique Elizabethan ‘Painted Room’, as well as the owners’ special collections which have been bequeathed to the Trust. The house has been visited by many thousands of visitors, both by the general public on open afternoons and countless specialist groups and schools. It deserves to be enjoyed by everyone.
To maintain it as a visitor attraction open to the public can only be done with adequate funding through donations, legacies and grants, on top of income from visitors. The magnificent Victorian Garden, as well as Orchard Lodge, have been bought back through the generous donations of friends and family. We are now seeking to acquire the Victorian Wing, the former gardeners’ cottages, as well as to establish an endowment fund in order to maintain and preserve St. Mary’s, and its associated buildings and grounds, into the future.
A number of important restoration projects have been completed, thanks to the support from many Charitable Foundations and Trusts.
The Trustees of the St. Mary’s Historic House Trust are constantly seeking complementary funding from concerned local individuals and businesses.
