The ‘Friends of St. Mary’s’ have existed since 1991, working to raise funds to support the maintenance of this remarkable historic house, its contents and extensive gardens. We are motivated by helping ensure that the whole of the St Mary’s Estate can continue to be enjoyed by the public and they can learn about its incredible history and royal connections.

We particularly help celebrate the dedicated achievements of the current owners, Peter Thorogood and Roger Linton, who purchased the house in 1984 with the specific mission of restoring it and ensuring it is kept open to the public. They did so by undertaking major restoration works and significantly enhancing the Estate, by adding their important private collections, they were subsequently each awarded MBE’s for their efforts by Queen Elizabeth II.

The ‘Friends’ have been instrumental in raising funds for important restoration projects through both membership subscriptions and organising events and functions.  Just a few of the projects supported include:

  • the installation of a shutting window
  • reinstatement of the blocked-up window in the east facade
  • display cases for the collections held at St. Mary’s
  • the rebuilding of the main Music Room window
  • a new Music Room roof
  • New bookshelves designed by Roger Linton for the Music Room
  • Initial restoration of the Victorian Glass House

However, restoration work is an ongoing task, and your help and support is urgently needed!
