Sadly the previous ‘Friends of St Mary’s’ had to close down.

A new ‘Supporters of St Mary’s’ is currently being developed.

Helping protect and keep St Mary’s House and Gardens presents a very major challenge. If you are committed and want to join us in helping ‘Save St Mary’s for the Nation’ to ensure it can be kept open to the public, then we would love to hear from you. We need dedicated people with skills, experience and time to contribute. We would love to discuss how you might help and contribute.

We want to build on and enhance the previous work of the ‘Friends of St. Mary’s’ that existed from 1991 – 2024. To continue working to raise funds to support the maintenance of this remarkable historic house, its contents and extensive gardens

We want to continue to celebrate the dedicated achievements of the current owners, Peter Thorogood and Roger Linton, who purchased the house in 1984 with the specific mission of restoring it and ensuring it is kept open to the public. They did so by undertaking major restoration works and significantly enhancing the Estate, by adding their important private collections, they were subsequently each awarded MBE’s for their efforts by Queen Elizabeth II.

The previous ‘Friends’ helped raising funds to contribute to restoration and maintenance projects. They had a standard membership subscription and also organising occasional events and functions.  Some of the work they helped contribute to included:

  • the installation of a shutting window
  • reinstatement of the blocked-up window in the east facade
  • display cases for the collections held at St. Mary’s
  • the rebuilding of the main Music Room window
  • a new Music Room roof
  • New bookshelves designed by Roger Linton for the Music Room
  • Initial restoration of the Victorian Glass House (although now further work is required)

Restoration and maintenance work is an ongoing task and genuine challenge across the St Mary’s Estate.
